The purpose of the course is to assist microfinance managers to understand the elements of effective leadership within their institution. Field managers are integral to institutional success by developing and sustaining high performance staff teams. Within each institution, ‘everything rises and falls on the leadership team’.
The course is based on ‘Leadership Challenge’ developed by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner. The course outlines critical elements of leadership used to transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, separateness into solidarity and risks into rewards. Utilizing the five ‘Leadership Challenge’ principles as the foundation for discussions, the training will cover the following topics: the difference between managing and leading, communication styles, constructive feedback, conflict resolution and performance management process.
A combination of lecture, discussion, examples and case studies are used to explore the issues of leadership within MFIs. Many practical tools are provided that managers can use to apply the principles learned during the course within their institution.
